St Francis Day: Blessing of the Animals

Born into the family of a wealthy merchant, Francis gave up his inheritance to serve poor people. He formed the Order of Friars Minor (called Franciscans), who took on poverty and the task of preaching “using words if necessary.” Francis had a spirit for all of God’s creation.

Next Sunday, October 4th, we will celebrate St. Francis and the blessing of all creation – including God’s creatures! Smaller pets will be blessed during both worship services. For your pet’s safety, please be sure all pets are secure on leashes, in cages, or in pet carriers. Larger animals (livestock-sized) will be blessed in the parking lot between services.

If you want to get your pets blessed, bring them on down to St Mark on this coming Sunday. All are welcome.

Also on this day, we will gather pet supplies for “Concern for Animals,” a local non-profit organization that offers animal welfare services in Thurston, Mason, and Lewis Counties. Their animal food bank needs include:  dog/puppy food and treats, cat/kitten food and treats, domestic bird food, non-clumping cat litter (smaller bags preferred), pet beds or blankets in good condition, dog and cat toys, leashes and collars, carriers and crates, and rabbit or guinea pig food.

Monetary donations are gratefully accepted. Just make your check out to St. Mark and write “Concern for Animals” on the memo line. Thank you!
