4W & 1L: Just a Hiccup On Our Way

This week’s game was the first loss this season for our St. Mark  Championship Trophy-winning Co-ed Intergenerational Softball Team. But the heart and enthusiasm they played with was still evident! The final score of 7-8 reflected a hard-fought come back. The bats were connecting, many strikes were thrown, the opposing hits were contained in the infield, the double-plays were there. As one faithful fan, David V, exclaimed, “We just needed another inning!”

The bottom of the sixth inning belonged to Jennifer K, playing at second base. She made all three outs, with two snags and throws to first, and a fly deftly caught. Screams from the stands could be heard….”Way to go Mommie!!” Jennifer’s comment about her stellar inning was, “My youth was reborn!”

Shortstop, Krista J, won the “dirt in the shirt” award! She dove several times, stretching her arms as far as they would reach, to stop the grounders coming her way. Often, after recovering to her feet, she threw a bullet to the bag for the out. Her teammates hailed her for sacrificing it all for the team. When asked if she had ripped any of her clothing, she replied, “No, just my skin.”

Fielder Kevin R catches anything hit near him, and gives the ball a long ride when up to bat. But most impressive is his base running…like a “bat out of heaven”!! If you happen to be positioned in front of Kevin in the batting order, look out behind ya!!

Joe B was hit by a pitched ball twice, but refrained from charging the mound. And third base Coach, Darrin L, held back his displeasure with the ump’s calls. All in true St. Mark sportsman-like fashion.

As the dug-out was emptying, Head Coach John M had a word to say about the loss…”Ouch!!”

All members of the team played well and can be proud of their contribution. Next week St. Mark plays a double-header, 6:00 pm and 7:10 pm on Field #4. Come on out for some genuine edge-of-your-seat excitement and help cheer OUR TEAM on to victory! You’ll be glad you did.
