“Carry no purse…”

In today’s Children’s Time, Pastor Beth asked the kids to help her make up a packing list for her trip to a family reunion this summer. Diamonds, boots, swim suit and snacks were among the things suggested. Pastor prompted the kids to think about that in addition to all the “stuff” we pack on a trip, we need to pack love in our hearts whenever we go out into the world.

Today’s Gospel Reading from Luke 10 tells us that Jesus sends out laborers to the harvest, to go where he would go and do what he would do. He told them to “carry no purse, no bag, no sandals”, but to tell the people that the kingdom of God is near.  When the laborers returned, they were full of joy because the people had listened, and all the demons submitted to them.

When Jesus asks us to do something we need to listen, then “go where he would go and do what he would do”. What happens next does not depend on what we take with us…we just need a heart full of love to share. (And like the kids say, a few diamonds wouldn’t hurt!)
