Lay School of Theology

Lay School of Theology classes offered at Emmanuel Lutheran Church (1315 N Stevens St, Tacoma) are open to everyone. Class descriptions are given on the Education Page of Emmanuel’s website and are identified as part of the “Lay School of Theology”. Classes are scheduled about a month in advance. When no “Lay School of Theology” classes are scheduled, there is no mention of the Lay School on Emmanuel’s website.

Courses are offered on a wide variety of subjects. Some recent classes have included:

  • Old Testament
  • New Testament
  • Various Specific Bible Books
  • Early Christian Church History
  • American Christian Church History
  • Biblical Archeology

Courses are offered by a variety of highly regarded seminary instructors, university instructors, pastors of various churches, and synod representatives and are intended for a lay person audience. Courses consist of 4 to 8 two-hour sessions. Dates are one session per week on a Tuesday or Thursday. For some out-of-town instructors dates may be consecutive days of the week. Courses are at 3 to 5 PM and repeated at 7 to 9 PM. The cost is $15 for an entire 4 to 8 session course. No advance registration is needed. These instructors are excellent speakers and it would be very difficult to get this level of instruction elsewhere for such a reasonable cost.
