Our Lenten Journey — Hunger: Physical and Spiritual

Lent is a time of prayer, service, and self-examination. During this time, many of us choose to live simpler lives, remembering those who do not have the food, money, or resources to simply live. Here at St. Mark we will walk with those who are hungry and living in poverty this Lenten season.

Matthew 25:35 — I was hungry and you gave me food, I was thirsty and you gave me drink; I was a stranger and you welcomed me.

At 5:45 pm each Wednesday through March 28, we will gather in the Parish Hall for a simple meal of rice and vegetables – lining up in a food line not unlike a refugee camp. And not unlike a refugee camp, we are asking each person to bring their own bowl, eating utensil, and napkin (if you forget, we will have bowls and utensils ready).

John 6:35 — I am the bread of life.

Then at 6:30 pm, we will walk down to the Sanctuary for time of worship, prayer, contemplation, music, and silence. This will be our mid-week opportunity to come together to remember our own spiritual hunger. We will use candles and artwork as we gather together to worship God and pray for the end of all kinds of hunger in the world.

James 2:15-16 — If a brother or sister lacks food and one of you says, “go in peace,” and yet do not supply their bodily needs, what is the good of that?

All 2012 Lenten offerings will be donated to the Thurston County Homeless High School Youth Clothing Account.
