The Risk of Faith

In today’s sermon, Retired Pastor David I. Nelson suggested we ask ourselves questions such as, “What am I most invested in…my own comfort or the Holy Shalom?”, “How would it feel to experience peace that costs me something?”, and “When was the last time I ignored God’s call for compassion for those in need?”  Questions like these remind us that a life of faith is not without risk.

Our scripture readings from Jeremiah 23 and Hebrews 11 compel us to wrestle with the idea that the Peace of Christ is, at times, disturbing, challenging and surprising. In our Gospel reading from Luke 12, we hear Jesus declaring that obedience to God’s call can have both purifying and divisive effects.
