New Garden Beds in the Community Garden

On two very cold and freezing weekends in January, a hardy crew of volunteers assembled 22 new raised garden beds for the St. Mark Community Garden.  Led and then FED by Jorgen Behringer, some very handy people (hand-picked by Gail Frare, Garden Coordinator,) came together to take the many, many pre-built pieces, and turn them into very nice looking and hopefully long-lasting garden beds.  After the work, Jorgen treated everyone to a King’s feast of his specialty Barbecued Ribs, Mac-n-cheese, potato salad, and biscuits!

About a third of the beds were rebuilt two years ago as an Eagle Scout project by Evan and Randy Kerlee.  The bulk of the crumbling beds for this project were on the North end of the garden.

Jorgen raised his hand this past Fall after a request for help was made one Sunday morning by Gail Frare, Garden Coordinator.  This was a difficult project requiring skill and strength. Gary Delozier, our Head Gardener, did not have time for it, and Gail had no skill or strength for it!  Jorgen looked over three different plans and came up with his own design.  He single-handedly made all the beds in pieces over the month of December.  The beds are pictured here in the article and are made of galvanized metal and pressure treated wood.  They are very attractive and are a nice addition to the garden.  The original beds lasted 15 years and our hope is that these will last as long.

Many thanks to Jorgen Behringer, Tim and Hope Mead and their daughter, Joseph Parrett, Ion Monsanu, and Gary Delozier.
