African Worship June 19, 2011

African Sunday was a Musical and Visual feast!

We arrived at St. Mark June 19th for Trinity Sunday to find lots of people dressed in colorful African garb.  These beautiful fabrics and clothing were purchased by the many in our church who have traveled to Tanzania to work with the Safi School Project.

Following the welcome by Pastor Linda, the call to worship was spirit- filled with various types of drums, tambourines, and other percussion items.  John Martin was at the piano orchestrating an outstanding morning of music.  Young and old were swaying, tapping their feet, and clapping to the beat (definitely an out- of- the- box experience for many American  Lutherans!)  There were huge smiles on everyone’s faces as we made a JOYFUL noise to the Lord!

On the front wall of the chancel was a new creation – this one of the 7 days of creation.  The scripture of the day was Genesis 1: 1-2:4.   Former pastor, David Nelson and member John M gave the children’s sermon, and then  David Nelson gave the sermon in which he explained the artistic creation on the wall and credited others who helped create it. In pure David style, he talked about creation and creativity using many analogies such as “Gardeners of Grace”.

Thanks to everyone who shared their gifts and talents to the glory of God in this African worship.  See the pictures below.
