Maundy Thursday Reflections

Pastor Eric’s Maundy Thursday sermon centered on Jesus washing the feet of the disciples during the Last Supper.  Jesus performed this act out of love and humility as an example for us all.

“So”, Pastor Eric asked us, “what does a foot-washing church look like?”  He outlined three main points:

1.  Extravagant Generosity:  GIVE, GIVE, GIVE, because it swells your heart and produces so much joy in you and others!  A foot-washing church would not have ” reluctant generosity” where we give because we feel it is our duty – there is no joy in that!

2.  Attentive Customer Service:  “Come in, let us help you. We have been waiting for you!”  A foot-washing church would not have  annoying customer service, ignoring those that are new.

3.  LOVE:  Come one and all – let us wash your feet to show you how much we love you and how worthy you are!  Come join us in worship and fellowship and sacraments like Baptism and Communion.  You are SO welcome!  You are one of us – a cherished and loved child of God!

The “LAW” has 613 commandments and we know that we have failed at keeping those.  No human can keep all those laws because we are imperfect creatures.  For 2,000 years we haven’t done it right from the LAW’s standpoint, but the church is still here.  Why? Because of God’s love – his Extravagant, Generous and Undying Love and acceptance for all his people.

We will continue to do our best living the commandments but our huge safety net of GRACE is God’s love for us.   Let us all learn from Jesus and wash each others feet in our hearts.
