Jesus bridges “Us” versus “Them”

Time Magazine’s cover this past week is about the tensions between nations due to what is happening in Crimea.  The question posed is whether we are starting another Cold War – whether it is again going to be  “Us” versus “Them”.   In the Gospel reading this week Jesus is a member of the Jewish nation in another nation, Samaria.  He cannot get himself a drink at the well and asks the Samaritan woman for a drink.  He is crossing all cultural boundaries and creating a bridge between his ‘tribe’ and the ‘other’ – between “Us” and “Them”.   He allowed for the Samaritan woman to meet a stranger and attend to a human need no matter who it was.  If the world is to become a better place, this is what we must all do – be God’s hand and love in the world.   This may not help us totally change the world, but it will help us to change the way we see the world forever.
