New Pictures in Liturgical Art

An update of the Liturgical Art page has been completed.  A slideshow of the recent Easter – Pentecost Art has been added.  A Huge debt of gratitude is owed to Retired Pastor David I. Nelson for continuing to bring our church alive with art during all seasons of the year!  God Bless you David!

Advent Art Explanation

We always love David Nelson’s seasonal creations on the Sanctuary wall, but it is even better when he tells us what the art means to him.  Here is his description of the 2014 Advent/Christmas art. If blue were a word, it would be a minor key perhaps like the Yiddish folk tune of Light One…

Advent Art has begun!

What started this fall as corn stalks painted on the sanctuary wall (along with real corn stalks and pumpkins), has morphed into a lovely tree line as Advent begins.  Retired Pastor David Nelson is at it again with his inspirational art work.  Come each Sunday in Advent and watch as the wall continues to change…

Give Even a Cup of Cold Water

Our artist in residence and retired St Mark pastor, David Nelson, began his sermon by telling us that every creative thing we make is a process.  The end object is a celebration of the process.  The Creation Story, that is represented by the banner now in our worship space, challenges us with four things among…

“Creation” Art

View below 2 slideshows of Creation Artistry by retired pastor David Nelson which has graced our altar wall for the last several weeks. Listen to David’s audio description and inspiration of this Art. Note the duel use of the word “Creation”. The art is about “God’s Creation of the World”, but the art itself is the…

Easter Liturgical Art 2014

The purple Lenten banners revealed a beautiful sunrise Easter Morning.  Christ is risen!  Flowers adorned the base of the cross which was draped, not in purple, but in red and gold.  Thanks once again to our retired pastor, David I. Nelson for making art an integral part of worship at St. Mark Lutheran Church.

Palm Sunday Passion Narrative

Many members of the congregation helped bring the dramatic message of Palm Sunday alive at St. Mark. The Passion Narrative, according to the Gospel of Matthew, was presented through responsive readings, special instrumental and vocal music, and our choir singing rounds of “Hosanna, Hosanna!” We all waved palm leaves commemorating Jesus’ triumphal entry into Jerusalem.…

Lenten Art – The Road to the Cross

For the last several weeks the sanctuary has displayed a rugged cross and purple banners symbolizing our time of reflection.  We see a road to the cross starting at our baptismal font.  On Palm Sunday, palms were added to symbolize Jesus entering Jerusalem as the King and then shortly after arrested and sent to the…

Liturgical Art – Christmas 2013 and Epiphany 2014

Check out the slideshow attached to this post to view the beautiful artwork which has appeared on the Sanctuary Wall as we have made our way through the Christmas and Epiphany Season. This artwork and some of the other Christmas Altar decorations are courtesy of former Pastor David Nelson and his able crew of helpers.…

Advent Art 2013

Banners on the church wall proclaim Advent this year.  The first Sunday Isaiah was placed as he was the one to foretell the Savior’s birth.  The Second Sunday King David was added as Jesus was of the house and lineage of King David.  The third Sunday John the Baptist was placed – “old Locust breath”…
